Fast Guard

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, to spend precious moments with family, indulge yourself, and take a welcome break from work. But although we may take time off, thieves most certainly don’t. This holiday season, don’t let your guard down; remain vigilant and keep your home and belongings safe in order to fully enjoy Christmas. Fortunately, there are some easy steps that you can take in order to prepare yourself against theft;

  1. Keep Your Information to Yourself

To begin with, if you are planning on leaving your home for an extended period over the holidays, ensure that you limit who you tell, or where you tell them – make sure that you aren’t spreading the news down at your local shop or post office, you can never tell who’s listening! Also, keep the information off of social media, potential burglars are watching these channels to seek the perfect opportunity to target your home. Even small things like putting it on a calendar which is viewable by strangers who may require access to your home to do work is inadvisable.

  1. Be Mindful of Lighting

Ensure that your house is well lit to give the impression that you are home, and to also prevent the opportunity for thieves to operate under the cover of darkness. It is far more difficult for a thief to break in when they are spot lit! Furthermore, don’t run external lights for decorating the outside of your house through your windows – that slight gap that they create is just enough for a burglar to wedge open to gain access to your home.

  1. Don’t Provide Temptation for Thieves

Make sure that your gifts under the tree are not visible from the outside of your home. Yes, it may look festive and exciting, but it is also too tempting for thieves to ignore! Close your curtains, put the gifts underneath at the last minute, or else put the tree in a spot which isn’t visible from the windows to remove temptation and the risk of becoming a victim of crime.

  1. Take a Trip to the Recycling Center

Be mindful about where you dispose your packaging. Your home is just as likely to be broken into in the aftermath of Christmas day as much as it is in the build-up, especially if you are telling the street what you received as gifts by placing the boxes that they came in into the recycling bin, or on the curb waiting for recycling to be collected. Similarly, don’t post about what you were gifted on social media, as thieves are opportunists and are always watching.
