A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded on the waters of Alabama’s Lake Martin over the weekend, where a young mother of four was killed after being thrown from a speeding boat. Authorities confirmed the victim, 29-year-old Jessica Hayes, died instantly after being ejected and struck by the vessel’s propeller.
Hayes, her husband Mark, and their four young children were enjoying a sunny afternoon on the lake with friends when the accident occurred. According to officials from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Marine Patrol Division, the boat hit a sudden wake, causing Jessica to be thrown overboard.
Despite wearing a life vest, she was unable to avoid the boat’s propeller as it circled back. Paramedics responded quickly, but Hayes was pronounced dead at the scene from severe injuries.
“This is a devastating loss for a young family just enjoying their day on the water,” said Trooper Rodney Thomas. “It’s a tragic reminder of how quickly fun can turn into disaster.”
Jessica Hayes was a devoted wife and mother to four children, all under the age of 10. Friends and neighbors describe her as kind-hearted, full of life, and deeply committed to her family.
“She was the glue that held her family together,” said friend and neighbor Alisha Morgan. “She had a laugh that filled a room and a heart that never said no to anyone in need.”
The community in Tallapoosa County has rallied around the Hayes family, launching a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral costs and long-term support for the children. The campaign raised more than $25,000 within 24 hours.
Authorities are still investigating the incident, but early reports indicate no foul play or alcohol were involved. The boat’s driver, believed to be Jessica’s husband, is cooperating fully with officials.
Boating safety experts emphasize the importance of emergency shut-off switches and increased caution when passengers are on board.
“This tragedy highlights the need for heightened awareness on the water,” said boating safety instructor Lisa Hargrove. “Even experienced boaters must remain vigilant, especially with family on board.”
A candlelight vigil will be held at Willow Creek Church on Friday evening to honor Jessica’s life and support her grieving family. Local leaders and loved ones hope her memory will inspire others to take extra care on Alabama’s waterways.
