Taylor Farms is once again under scrutiny after being linked to a multistate foodborne illness outbreak, renewing concerns about the company’s food safety record. Federal investigators have traced a recent cyclospora outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms from central Mexico. The contaminated lettuce was distributed to foodservice customers, including Taco Bell locations in several Midwestern states, prompting recalls and precautionary measures.
The latest outbreak has sickened thousands of people across dozens of states, with many requiring hospitalization. In response, Taylor Farms voluntarily removed all iceberg lettuce sourced from the affected region from the U.S. market while the investigation continues. The company has stated that its branded salad kits are not involved in the outbreak.
Latest Outbreak Investigation
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, traceback investigations linked the illnesses to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Officials continue to determine whether additional restaurants or products were affected.
Cyclospora is a parasite that causes an intestinal illness known as cyclosporiasis. Symptoms commonly include prolonged watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, and weight loss. While treatable with antibiotics, the illness can persist for weeks if left untreated.

Previous Food Safety Incidents
This is not the first time Taylor Farms has been associated with a major food safety investigation. In 2024, the company recalled slivered onions after they were identified as the likely source of an E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers. That outbreak sickened more than 100 people and resulted in one death.
Taylor Farms has also been connected to previous produce-related outbreaks, including a 2013 cyclospora investigation involving salad products supplied to restaurants. Those incidents have contributed to ongoing scrutiny of food safety practices throughout the fresh produce supply chain.
Company Response and Industry Impact
Taylor Farms says food safety remains its top priority and has emphasized that only lettuce from the implicated growing region is affected. The company is cooperating with federal investigators while reviewing its sourcing and production processes. Taco Bell has removed the affected lettuce from restaurants served by the supplier, and distributors have halted shipments from the identified source.
As the investigation continues, health officials are urging consumers to follow public health advisories and remain alert for symptoms of foodborne illness. The latest outbreak underscores the challenges of maintaining food safety in complex produce supply chains and highlights the importance of rapid traceback investigations when contamination is detected.
