On Tuesday afternoon, a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy fatally shot and killed a man during an altercation that ensued from a failed traffic stop, prompting authorities to commence an ongoing probe.
According to Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO), this incident started when members of their Robbery Interventions Detail attempted to stop a yellow Corvette near NW 62nd Street and 22nd Avenue for having illegal dark window tints; instead of complying, its driver fled, setting off a pursuit that continued into Key Biscayne and back towards Miami Beach.
MDSO deployed air support in order to locate a fleeing vehicle, which eventually was found near an apartment complex on NW 85th Street and NW 4th Court. When its passenger exited his vehicle and presented themselves as an armed threat, deputies reported this information, and one deputy fired their weapon, fatally striking one individual from that group. Kristofer Lazaro Laboy, 24, was identified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).
MDSO Public Information Officer Argemis Colome expressed displeasure over the unfortunate developments surrounding his deputies’ encounter. In an official statement issued by Colome, she expressed frustration over how quickly events escalated into fatal violence without need. Although no deputies were injured directly due to this encounter, its potential danger remains present and must remain under consideration by law enforcement officials. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an investigation of this shooting as is customary following officer-involved incidents. To date, no further details about Laboy’s activities prior to being shot have been disclosed by law enforcement and further details remain to be determined by investigation.

This incident has raised serious concerns regarding the use of force during traffic stops and risks officers and suspects face when facing high-pressure encounters. Contact us for PERSONAL SECURITY SERVICES Today
