According to Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office records, deputies became involved in a fatal confrontation when trying to stop an attempted traffic stop near Northwest 62nd Street and 22nd Avenue in northwest Miami-Dade County. Deputies with Robbery Interventions Detail spotted an illegally dark tinted yellow Corvette near NW 62nd Street/22nd Avenue that they attempted to pull over; when officers attempted to stop this vehicle’s driver (identified by law enforcement as Laboy) refused and drove off quickly before police could intervened despite officers best efforts attempting to stop this vehicle before speeding off into Miami-Dade county.
A pursuit ensued before ultimately coming to a dead-end at an apartment complex near Northwest 85th Street and 4th Court, near which Laboy was seen exiting while still armed and approaching deputies armed. A deputy fired upon Laboy in response and shot and killed him instantly at the scene.
Laboy’s family have cast doubt upon the deputies’ account. According to them, no law enforcement officers ever identified themselves during the stop. Furthermore, Laboy called his father during the event out of fear someone was following him – suggesting a possible panicked situation during their meeting with authorities.
The sheriff’s office has not released full details regarding what led up to this shooting or Laboy’s approach towards deputies, sparking deep concern from community members and family. Community members want clarification as to if proper protocols were followed during their traffic stop, for their safety.
Authorities continue their probe as they review body camera footage, witness statements and other evidence related to this case. It highlights ongoing tensions between law enforcement and community groups regarding police conduct when encountering suspects with guns.
