Authorities in Idaho have discovered a man dead with a firearm near his body just hours after two firefighters were killed in what police are calling a targeted ambush.
The incident began Sunday evening when fire crews responded to a call in the small town of Bunker Hill, Idaho, approximately 50 miles southeast of Coeur d’Alene. As two firefighters approached the residence, gunfire erupted unexpectedly, fatally striking both responders.
The shocking act of violence prompted a massive manhunt in the surrounding area. Law enforcement agencies, including local sheriff’s deputies, state police, and tactical teams, scoured nearby woods and rural properties in search of a suspect.
By early Monday morning, authorities confirmed that a man believed to be the suspect was found dead in a wooded area roughly a mile from the shooting scene. A firearm was located near his body, and officials are working to confirm his identity.
“It appears the individual died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though the medical examiner will provide the final determination,” said Shoshone County Sheriff Dan Morrissey during a press briefing.
The names of the fallen firefighters have not yet been released, pending family notification. Both were reportedly longtime members of the local fire department and well-known within the tight-knit community.
“This is an unimaginable loss,” said Bunker Hill Fire Chief Lisa Carver. “Our hearts are broken. These brave men were simply doing their jobs, answering a call for help, and they were met with violence.”
Authorities have not released details about the original emergency call or what might have motivated the attack. Investigators are reviewing 911 recordings and speaking with neighbors to piece together a timeline of events.
Idaho Governor Brad Little issued a statement expressing condolences to the victims’ families and condemning the violence. “Our first responders put their lives on the line every day. This attack on public servants is deeply disturbing and will not be forgotten.”
Grief counselors have been made available for fire department personnel and members of the community. A candlelight vigil is being planned to honor the fallen heroes later this week.
