A group of 31 construction workers was safely rescued after a tense and dangerous situation unfolded in Los Angeles, where a section of an underground industrial tunnel partially collapsed. The incident occurred during ongoing work on a major wastewater infrastructure project in the Wilmington neighborhood.

The tunnel, part of a $600 million-plus expansion known as the Clearwater Project, stretches several miles beneath the surface. It is being built approximately 400 to 450 feet underground and is designed to modernize the city’s wastewater system. At the time of the collapse, workers were deep inside—about five to six miles from the tunnel’s main access point.

According to emergency officials, the workers had been traveling in a transport vehicle when the collapse occurred, blocking their path and forcing them to retreat on foot. Navigating complete darkness, uneven terrain, and piles of loose debris, they worked together to crawl through tight spaces and over mounds of dirt up to 15 feet high.

Over 100 members of the Los Angeles Fire Department, including specially trained urban search and rescue units, responded to the scene. Using specialized equipment, including a large crane and rescue cage, crews were able to reach the trapped workers and bring them to the surface.

Despite the challenging conditions, no injuries were reported. Officials credited the workers’ composure and training, along with the quick and coordinated efforts of first responders, for preventing what could have been a far more tragic outcome.

Mayor Karen Bass praised both the workers and the rescue crews, calling their survival and teamwork “nothing short of heroic.” City Council representatives also emphasized the importance of maintaining strict safety protocols on complex infrastructure projects like this one.

The cause of the partial collapse is under investigation. All work on the site has been paused pending a full safety assessment. Experts will examine whether geological shifts, equipment failure, or structural factors played a role in the incident.

For now, the city is grateful that all lives were spared. The dramatic rescue highlights the risks faced by workers on large-scale construction sites and the vital importance of emergency preparedness and rapid response.
