Months after Raequan Smith, 20, was killed in the Naranja area of Miami-Dade on February 7, two individuals — including his 17-year-old sister Deashia Smith — have been charged with his killing. Authorities announced Deashia Smith and 19-year-old Elton Hightower will both face second-degree murder charges related to that February incident.

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a ShotSpotter alert detecting 39 gunshots at around midnight on February 7 in the 13800 block of Southwest 266th Street. They found numerous shell casings at the scene.

As soon as the authorities learned of Rae’quan Smith’s disappearance, two unidentified males transported him to HCA Florida Cutler Bay Emergency Center, where medical attempts failed to treat multiple gunshot wounds to him. Tragically, Rae’quan succumbed despite the efforts of doctors.

Deashia Smith made headlines in March after she was arrested for unlawful possession of firearms by a felon, leading to further testing confirming it as one of two used to kill her brother, leading Hightower and himself to be officially charged on Wednesday.

The arrest of Rae’quan’s sister in his killing has added an unprecedented layer of sorrow and uncertainty to an already heartbreaking case. Investigators have yet to ascertain what was behind Rae’quan’s murder or how the suspects planned and carried out their attack; their investigation remains active as authorities piece together events leading up to his fatal shooting.
