Deltona authorities arrested a mother and her boyfriend after finding their 6-year-old daughter wandering alone with their pup on Friday. Both individuals have been charged with desertion of a child and abandonment of an animal. One neighbor called the Volusia Sheriff’s Office when she noticed the girl walking around her yard; after seeing this occur, both provided her with food, water, and clean clothes as part of an intervention program.
Deputies arrived on the scene and spoke with the child, who informed them she was hot, thirsty, and hungry. Body camera footage shows deputies asking where her parents were, to which she responded that “they had to go somewhere”. Deltona Fire Rescue also responded and assessed her vitals.
Authorities later located and arrested both the child’s mother and boyfriend for abandoning both her child and its pet dog, as well as facing charges related to this abandonment. Officials are conducting an ongoing investigation to ascertain the circumstances behind their abandonment, while both the girl and her pet have been placed under state care following this incident.
