Michael Tanzi, 48, will be executed at Florida State Prison on April 8 after being found guilty of kidnapping and killing Janet Acosta in April 2000. Governor Ron DeSantis signed his death warrant on Monday. Tanzi kidnapped Acosta while she sat parked in her van before attacking her with a razor blade, strangling her to death, and finally strangling himself with her neck strap as part of an elaborate scheme to commit a horrific crime spree.

Court documents allege that Tanzi used the razor blade to threaten Acosta before strangling her to death in her van. Tanzi’s actions led directly to the tragic loss of Acosta’s life; therefore, his conviction resulted in an imposition of the death penalty.

Tanzi’s scheduled execution comes after years of legal proceedings and appeals, garnering public attention due to both his brutal crime as well as the lengthy legal proceedings that often accompany death penalty cases. It will take place at Florida State Prison – typically where Florida death row inmates are executed – where many others like him were scheduled for executions as well.

This execution marks another high-profile case in Florida, where the death penalty debate has long been contentious. Tanzi’s case has focused attention on Florida’s legal system and how it handles death row inmates. As his execution date approaches, many are taking note of both the details of his crime and the ongoing debate surrounding the death penalty in America.
