What Is an F-01 Fire Guard in NYC?

The F-01 Certificate of Fitness is FDNY’s Citywide Fire Guard for Impairment credential.

FDNY states that when a required fire-protection system is out of service, a fire watch must be maintained.

For an affected area of 50,000 square feet or less, the impairment coordinator or a trained and knowledgeable person designated by the building owner may conduct the initial four hours of a planned or unplanned impairment.

After four hours, the patrol must be conducted by fire guards holding the F-01 Certificate of Fitness.

How Many F-01 Fire Guards Are Required?

The number of fire guards depends on the size and configuration of the affected area.

Current FDNY guidance states that an individual fire guard should not patrol more than 50,000 square feet of building floor area.

The fire guard must also be able to patrol all affected areas at least once every hour. For larger affected areas, multiple F-01 personnel may therefore be necessary.
