On Thursday afternoon at Fort Lauderdale Beach, tragedy struck when the body of a teenage swimmer reported missing near the 800 block of Seabreeze Boulevard was located by Fort Lauderdale Police’s dive team and several boats searching the area for her.
Divers soon located the body and determined that accidental drowning had taken place. One of his basketball teammates spoke out against lifeguards’ inaction when trying to return them safely to shore; lifeguards responded immediately as soon as their coach noticed one was still out in the ocean. A parent spoke out, explaining to NBC6 how their son had been struggling to get back to shore when lifeguards quickly came in to help the group. The lifeguards brought her son safely back, but they noticed another teammate was still out there and did nothing.

Lake Worth students had traveled to Fort Lauderdale to form a bond as a team. Parents accompanied the group at the time of the incident. Their tragic drowning has shocked and grieved both their community and family and friends of the victim, with authorities still investigating the circumstances around the incident, and the lifeguard’s response being commended for helping prevent further injuries.
