Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony announced Thursday that investigators have identified a suspect in the 1975 slayings of 14-year-olds Barbara Schreiber and Darlene Zetterower in Broward County.
On a June day in 1975, two girls who had recently graduated from middle school and were about to enter high school were last seen sitting on a bench in Hollywood, Florida. According to eyewitness accounts, a white van with two men inside pulled up, and witnesses reported seeing the girls voluntarily enter it.
Tragically, they were never seen alive again. This heartbreaking sight stunned everyone involved and has left investigators baffled for decades.

Law enforcement had made numerous efforts in an attempt to open this cold case; however, recent advances in forensic science, particularly DNA analysis, provided them with an important breakthrough. Sheriff Tony reported that new evidence led to identification of an individual whom is believed to be involved – although details regarding their possible involvement have not yet been made public.
“This case is about providing justice to two young girls and closure for their families,” Tony stated at the press conference. He credited cold case detectives’ hard work as well as modern technologies for progress being made on an otherwise unsolved case.
Though no charges have been brought yet, the sheriff’s office continues its investigation and seeks to verify all available evidence.
