Brush Fire Shuts Down Roads to the Florida Keys, 3,600 Acres Burned

On Tuesday afternoon in Miami-Dade County, a brush fire caused significant disruptions and traffic jams along major roadways leading to and from the Florida Keys. It broke out at 1:17 p.m. near 40800 Block Card Sound Road and immediately prompted a response by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue teams and air rescue squads.

For firefighting purposes and access to additional water sources, authorities closed both Card Sound Road and US 1 north and southbound directions to expedite firefighting efforts and gain access to additional sources. Traffic became congested along the 18-mile Stretch; Monroe County Sheriff’s officials advised drivers to avoid it altogether. After around eight hours had passed, US 1 reopened, but Card Sound Road remained closed on Wednesday morning.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service have joined forces to contain this fire, which has burned an estimated 3,600 acres so far and is at a 20% containment level. No injuries or threats to nearby structures have been reported thus far, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is working closely together to contain it.

Authorities issued warnings to individuals living with respiratory conditions, advising them to limit outdoor exposure, keep vehicle windows closed, and use air conditioners to recirculate air.

Traffic disruptions due to ongoing firefighting efforts and road closures have greatly limited travel in and out of the Florida Keys, creating additional difficulties. Crews remain dedicated to containing and mitigating further firefighting disruptions. Contact us for fire watch services today
