A Florida mother has been arrested and charged with the murder of her 14-year-old daughter after authorities say she drowned the teen in a bathtub. The tragic incident took place early Tuesday morning at the family’s home in Fort Lauderdale, sparking an investigation into the events leading up to the young girl’s death.
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a 911 call placed by the mother, identified as 36-year-old Jessica Alvarez, who claimed that her daughter, Madison, had drowned while taking a bath. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found Madison unresponsive in the bathtub and immediately began lifesaving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly thereafter.
Investigators became suspicious after Alvarez’s account of the events began to raise questions. According to the police report, Alvarez had initially told officers that Madison had been taking a bath on her own when she lost consciousness.
