Officials confirmed Wednesday morning that an unfortunate wrong-way collision on Sunrise’s Sawgrass Expressway early Wednesday resulted in the tragic death of one woman and injuries to two drivers involved, according to officials.
At around 3 a.m. on the northbound lanes of the expressway near Oakland Park Boulevard in Florida, a red Buick sedan traveling south in the northbound lanes collided with a Freightliner truck head-on, according to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) officials.
At the scene of this accident in Midland, Georgia, a 38-year-old female Buick driver from Midland was declared deceased; her identity has yet to be released pending notification of family. Meanwhile, a 47-year-old truck driver from Hialeah sustained minor injuries that required hospital treatment before he was transported for further care.
Video footage taken at the crash scene showed emergency responders responding to severely damaged wreckage that was barely recognizable post-impact. A yellow tarp covering what may have been someone’s body could also be seen nearby.
Due to the severity of this accident, all northbound lanes of Sawgrass Expressway were temporarily closed, causing traffic delays and disruptions. Authorities worked swiftly to clean up and investigate what led up to it.
Wrong-way crashes are especially hazardous and frequently result in injury or even fatality, and are being closely investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol to ascertain what may have caused the wrong-way travel of the Buick in this instance.
