A New Mexico man accused of killing two people made a shocking confession to deputies, claiming that a cockroach instructed him to commit the murders. Authorities say the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Daniel Ruiz, was arrested after deputies discovered two victims dead at a rural residence in Valencia County.
The gruesome discovery was made after neighbors reported hearing screams and gunshots. Deputies arrived to find the victims inside the home with multiple injuries. Ruiz was later found wandering near the scene, allegedly covered in blood and acting erratically.
Bizarre Confession to Deputies
According to the sheriff’s office, Ruiz told investigators that he believed a cockroach had been speaking to him and commanded him to kill. Deputies noted that he appeared delusional and may have been under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident.
Sheriff Mike Allen described the case as “deeply disturbing and unlike anything we’ve encountered.” Authorities are now working to determine whether mental illness or substance abuse played a role in the killings.
Investigation and Charges
Ruiz has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is being held without bond. Detectives are awaiting toxicology results and conducting interviews with family members and acquaintances to learn more about his mental state leading up to the crime.
The victims’ identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Investigators are also examining evidence collected from the crime scene, including weapons and possible drug paraphernalia.
Community in Shock
The small New Mexico community remains shaken by the bizarre and brutal nature of the case. Local residents expressed disbelief and fear following the news. “It’s horrifying to think something like this could happen here,” one neighbor said.
Mental health advocates have urged greater awareness and resources for individuals showing signs of psychosis or severe distress. Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that no additional suspects are being sought.
