After Thursday’s fatal mass shooting at Florida State University (FSU), two parents from Broward County rushed to Tallahassee in response to check on their daughter, 18-year-old Jennifer Jenkins a freshman music major who sent texts assuring her parents she was physically safe, yet Jacqueline Jenkins felt compelled to drive up from Broward with her husband just in case anything might affect emotional wellbeing for Jennifer Jenkins.

On Saturday evening, students gathered at Florida State for a vigil to remember those lost during Friday night’s shooting, playing music and offering prayers in memory of them all. Jacqueline attended with Jennifer as well; Jacqueline shared with NBC6 how thankful she was that both had been physically unharmed after attending. However, Jacqueline expressed sadness about any emotional damage from what had taken place; “I needed to ensure she was okay,” Jacqueline commented.

Tragic events leave their mark on campus communities, including Jacqueline Jenkins’ family. She stressed the emotional toll these tragedies take, particularly on students; parents need to support their children during such devastating experiences and must do everything possible.

Jennifer’s parents’ decision to rush to Tallahassee illustrates the fear and uncertainty many parents feel during times of crisis involving their child, even if no physical harm comes of it. The vigil provided an outlet for FSU community members to come together, reflect, and offer support to one another as they navigated the aftermath of this tragedy.
