In a significant counterterrorism operation, the FBI arrested a Houston man on charges of plotting an attack on U.S. soil with alleged ties to ISIS. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Khalid Ali, was taken into custody earlier this week following an investigation into his activities and communications, which raised concerns of a potential terror threat within the United States.

Ali, a U.S. citizen originally from Houston, was allegedly in the process of making preparations for an attack in the city, which officials describe as being “inspired” by ISIS ideology. According to federal authorities, Ali had been in contact with individuals associated with the terrorist group, discussing methods of carrying out violent acts in support of ISIS’s goals. These communications were monitored by U.S. intelligence agencies, who had been tracking Ali for months.

The FBI’s Houston Field Office, in collaboration with other federal agencies, launched a covert operation after intercepting online messages in which Ali expressed a desire to engage in terrorist activity. Authorities have not specified the exact nature of the plot, but sources suggest it may have involved an attack targeting civilians in a densely populated area.

“This arrest represents a critical disruption of a potential terrorist plot on U.S. soil,” said Special Agent in Charge James Smith of the FBI’s Houston office. “Thanks to the diligent work of our law enforcement and intelligence partners, we were able to prevent a tragedy from occurring.”

The arrest follows a broader pattern of increased concern about domestic terrorism and radicalization within the U.S. While ISIS has seen a decline in territorial control in the Middle East, the group continues to inspire attacks and recruitment efforts globally, including in the United States.

Ali faces multiple federal charges, including attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization and conspiring to carry out an attack. Authorities have not disclosed the full details of the evidence that led to the arrest but emphasized that the case highlights the ongoing threats posed by extremist groups both abroad and within the U.S.

In a statement, the U.S. Department of Justice reaffirmed its commitment to preventing terrorist activity and holding accountable those who attempt to harm American citizens. “We will continue to work relentlessly to disrupt and dismantle terrorist plots and protect the safety of our communities,” said U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Ali is expected to appear in federal court for a detention hearing in the coming days. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
