According to her family, an Indiana toddler died after accidentally taking a suboxone pill she found in a backpack at a thrift store. Azana Trentman was taken to a local hospital after her parents noticed something was amiss on September 4, according to KFVS12. Unfortunately, on September 8 she was officially declared deceased.

Dearborn County Sheriff’s Office officials stated the cause of the toddler’s death remains under investigation and await results from an autopsy, KFVS12 reported. Suboxone is an opioid dependency treatment medication approved by Harvard Medical School. According to them, Suboxone may also help those addicted to opioids become opioid-free through this medication.
Austen Trentman and Shayna Wood, Azana’s parents, had taken her to a thrift store in Dillsboro where she was playing with a backpack as they browsed, Azana’s grandmother Tawnya Wood wrote on Facebook on Sept. 7.

At one point Azana found something in her backpack and consumed it, according to Ms. Evans’ account of their encounter. In response, Austin took swift action to clear her mouth by inducing vomiting as they didn’t know what it was; tasting the substance revealed sweet notes with an almost candy-like consistency; Azana continued acting normally after indulging, so they concluded it must have been some form of candy and carried on their day trip as planned. After realizing their daughter required immediate medical assistance, her parents rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was stabilized before being transported directly to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for further care.
