Kevin Bennette was arrested Thursday evening for the murder of off-duty Palm Beach corrections deputy Basil Powell. Bennette, 32, was arrested wearing the handcuffs that Powell used while serving the agency for three years and was shot outside his home Monday evening – leading investigators to believe he may have been ambushed as he returned home; Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw revealed that Bennette may have been upset over Powell’s relationship with one of Powell’s ex-partners which may have motivated the attack.
Bradshaw noted that Bennette’s anger over an unstable relationship did not justify taking Powell’s life. Although people make poor choices in life, killing over personal matters should never be justified.
